Rivers State High Court Rules in Favor of Edison Ehie in Fundamental Rights Suit Against Nigerian Police Port Harcourt High Court Extends Restraining Order Against Police in Fubara's Chief of Staff Case Breaking: Embattled Factional Speaker of Rivers State Assembly, Ehie Edison Resigns Misleading Claims Surface Regarding Rivers State Assembly Speaker

In a recent development, the Rivers State House of Assembly has refuted claims made by Edison Ehie, the former member representing Ahoada East Constituency II, who recently resigned from the House. The Assembly asserts that Ehie was never elected as the Speaker of the state legislature.

According to the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, in a letter dated January 1st, 2024, Ehie’s resignation letter addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission is deemed “misleading information.” Amadi emphasized that the position of the Speaker is a creation of the law, and at no point was Ehie elected to this role during his tenure.

The letter further dismissed Ehie’s assertion that he resigned from the position of Speaker, stating that he never occupied that office. The Assembly clarifies that the Speaker’s role is a constitutional entity, as outlined in the 1999 Constitution (as altered), and calls on the public to disregard Ehie’s false claims. Amadi highlights the legitimate election that took place on June 5th, 2023, resulting in the unanimous selection of Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule as the Speaker. Amaewhule has been dutifully performing his responsibilities since his election.

This revelation sheds light on a potential attempt to mislead the public and emphasizes the importance of upholding the integrity of the constitutional processes within the Rivers State House of Assembly. The Assembly urges the public to remain vigilant and informed, emphasizing that their commitment to preserving and abiding by the Constitution remains steadfast, the letter clarifies.
