The Nigerian Senate has firmly rebutted claims that it determines its own salaries or receives special financial packages from the Presidency.

These allegations emerged during a recent visit by House of Representatives members to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, sparking public debate.

Senate Spokesman Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South) issued a statement on Sunday in Abuja, labeling the accusations as an attempt to undermine the legislature through “political hypocrisy.” Adaramodu clarified that no Senator has received any financial benefits from the Presidency.

He explained that constituency projects, often associated with the legislature, are merely suggested and nominated by Senators, following democratic practices seen globally. The Senate, he added, only receives salaries allocated by the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission, in line with constitutional provisions.

He also detailed that the Executive arm, through various ministries and agencies, handles contract awards for constituency projects, ensuring federal resources benefit all regions.

As Nigeria experiences heightened political rhetoric, Adaramodu assured the public of the 10th Assembly’s dedication to Nigeria’s economic and developmental goals, reaffirming that the Senate adheres strictly to its constitutional salary allocation.
