Asaba, Nigeria – Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said the decision by him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was driven by the need to reposition Delta State for greater development.

Speaking during their formal reception into the APC at the Cenotaph in Asaba on Monday, Okowa described the move as a bold, patriotic, and strategic step aimed at ensuring better alignment with the federal government for the benefit of the state.

He explained that the defection was not motivated by personal ambition, but rather by the collective interest of Deltans. According to him, Delta State, as a significant contributor to the national economy, needs direct access to the goodwill and resources available in Abuja.

“In the life of a people, there comes a time when a change of direction becomes necessary for the common good,” Okowa said. “Whatever decision we have taken is for the good of our people and our state. I governed for eight years in opposition, and despite doing my best, we missed out on a lot.”

He noted that staying disconnected from the central government would only limit the potential gains for the people of Delta. “Governor Sheriff is working very hard for Delta, but he also needs the support that comes with being in synergy with the federal power structure,” he added.

Okowa emphasized that the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the state, adding that the move was taken with the future of Delta in mind.

“We must defend and protect the interests of Delta State. This defection is not just for today; it is about securing tomorrow. We must unite and work with one heart to strengthen our state politically,” he urged.

The former governor called on APC members to warmly embrace the new entrants, stressing that unity was crucial to building a stronger and more dominant political force in Delta.

“With this move, I believe no other party will rival the APC in Delta State. It is time to work together for the good of our people and to offer strong support to Mr President and our Governor,” he said.

Governor Oborevwori, Okowa, and other PDP members announced their defection to the APC last week, signaling a major realignment in Delta State’s political landscape.
