Abuja, Nigeria – Chris Nkwonta, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ukwa East/West Federal Constituency in Abia State, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was announced by Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, during Wednesday’s plenary session in Abuja.

Reacting to the development, Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Madaki invoked a section of the Nigerian Constitution, urging the Speaker to declare Nkwonta’s seat vacant.

In his response, Speaker Abbas acknowledged Madaki’s concerns but stated that he is aware of an existing faction within the PDP, which could justify the lawmaker’s defection.

Further details on the defection are expected to emerge as the situation unfolds.
