The motion was adopted, reinforcing the Senate’s backing of Akpabio’s leadership.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate, on Thursday, passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the leadership of the Red Chamber, amidst rumors of an impending impeachment.
This move followed reports circulating online that some senators were allegedly plotting to remove Akpabio from office. According to these reports, the Presidency had allegedly deployed operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) to the National Assembly in Abuja to prevent any potential impeachment attempts.
However, the Presidency swiftly issued a statement denying the existence of any such impeachment threat.
The Senate’s vote of confidence was triggered by a motion raised by former Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi. Abdullahi, who represents Kebbi North under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cited a news report that claimed northern senators were orchestrating the removal of the Senate President. He categorically denied any involvement, stating that neither he nor any members of the Northern Senators’ Forum were part of the alleged plot.
