Umuahia, Nigeria – Senator Esther Nenadi Usman has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Labour Party’s (LP) Caretaker Committee.
The appointment was made during an extended stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, on Wednesday.
Senator Usman, a former Minister of Finance who represented Kaduna South senatorial district from 2011 to 2015, will lead the 29-member committee.
The committee is tasked with steering the party through its ongoing leadership crisis and organizing a convention to elect new leaders from the ward to the national level within the next 90 days.
Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the immediate-past Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate representing Abia Central, has been appointed as the Secretary of the Caretaker Committee.
The meeting, which was hosted by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, saw the attendance of several prominent Labour Party figures, including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; his running mate, Datti Ahmed; Senator Victor Umeh; and Lagos State’s 2023 governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.
The gathering was marked by massive attendance, underscoring the party’s commitment to resolving its internal challenges.
