Chijioke Ihunwo, the newly elected Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, has taken steps to remove the name of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, from the administrative block of the local council secretariat. This decision comes following Wike’s notable role as a former governor of Rivers State and as a past chairman of the Obio Akpor council, as he hails from the Rumuepirikom community within the area.
According to a report, the minister’s name, previously displayed prominently on the council’s administrative building, has now been replaced with that of the late Obi Wali, a respected politician and activist from the region. In a video shared on his X page (@AmbChijioke) on Sunday, Ihunwo documented the removal of Wike’s name and the installation of Wali’s.
In his post, Ihunwo stated, “We have changed Wike’s name in the admin block of Obio/Akpor Council, and replaced it with the name of SENATOR DR. OBI WALI.”
This move follows the recent swearing-in of Ihunwo and 22 other newly elected local government chairpersons, who were appointed by the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. In the recent local council elections, the Action Peoples Party successfully secured 22 council seats, while the Action Alliance captured one. The conduct of the elections faced opposition from the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.
