In a revealing interview on the Zero Conditions podcast, Afrobeat star Seun Kuti candidly shared insights into his childhood experiences and his unique relationship with his legendary father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Seun, known for continuing his father’s musical legacy with the Egypt 80 band, provided a rare glimpse into the personal side of growing up as the son of one of Africa’s most influential musicians.
Seun reflected on what he describes as “winning the daddy lottery,” highlighting the preferential treatment he received from his father. While acknowledging that his siblings might have different views, Seun described Fela as an “amazing father” to him. He recounted his pampered upbringing, stating,
“You don’t know how spoilt I was growing up. Till now, I have never done laundry in my life. I don’t know how to wash anything. I’m not bragging.”
This privileged background, he suggested, was a direct result of the close bond he shared with his father.
Beyond his personal reflections, Seun also discussed his early introduction to music. At just eight years old, he joined his father’s band, Egypt 80, marking the beginning of a lifelong musical journey. Following Fela’s death, Seun was encouraged by his family to continue leading the band, a role he has embraced with dedication, ensuring that the legacy of Afrobeat lives on.
