Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, in connection with an alleged assault on a cab driver in Abuja.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, Ikwechegh was detained at the Maitama Police Station and is currently undergoing questioning. The incident reportedly occurred during a delivery dispute between Ikwechegh and the driver, identified as Stephen Abuwatseya.
Adeh explained that Mr. Abuwatseya had filed a complaint with the police, stating that he was physically assaulted by Ikwechegh while delivering a package to the lawmaker. “Preliminary investigations indicate that a dispute arose regarding the delivery method, during which Mr. Abuwatseya was allegedly slapped,” she said.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that Ikwechegh’s response to the confrontation raised concerns. “Following the alleged assault, Hon. Ikwechegh reportedly told the victim, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ which demonstrates a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.”
Olatunji Disu, the FCT Commissioner of Police, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter, underscoring the Command’s commitment to a fair and impartial inquiry. “The Command is dedicated to ensuring justice in all cases, and upon the conclusion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the statement read.
The incident has sparked discussions on the conduct of public officials and the importance of accountability, with many calling for swift and transparent handling of the case.
