Abuja, Nigeria – The House of Representatives has officially confirmed the appointment of Lt. Gen. Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The confirmation came on Thursday following the consideration and approval of a report by the ad hoc committee responsible for screening the nominee.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede was initially appointed in an acting capacity by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after the death of the former COAS, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. Subsequently, the president submitted Oluyede’s name to the National Assembly for formal screening and confirmation.
Presenting the committee’s report, Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the ad hoc screening committee, highlighted the thorough review of Oluyede’s credentials and his performance during the screening process. According to Benson, the nominee provided detailed responses to questions on national security and demonstrated competence and experience necessary for the role.
“The committee was satisfied with the capacity of Lt. Gen. Oluyede to lead the Nigerian Army and, therefore, recommended his confirmation,” Benson stated.
The House approved the confirmation through a unanimous voice vote after conducting a clause-by-clause review of the report.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede now assumes the position of the substantive Chief of Army Staff, a critical role in Nigeria’s military leadership.
