Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce an immediate shutdown of all pornographic websites across the country.
The resolution was passed during plenary on Tuesday following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, who represents the Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency. Tafoki emphasized the urgent need to curb cyber pornography, citing its detrimental effects on societal values.
While presenting his motion, he highlighted that internet service providers facilitating access to explicit content should be sanctioned. He also pointed out that Nigeria, being a deeply religious nation, should align with other countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East that have taken legal steps to prohibit pornography.
According to Tafoki, psychological and sociological experts have consistently warned about the harmful impact of pornography, including its potential to promote adultery, prostitution, addiction, and a shift in moral attitudes within families and society at large.
Following a voice vote, the House adopted the motion and tasked its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance with ensuring full implementation. The committees are expected to present a report within four weeks for further legislative review.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abass, also stressed that internet providers failing to comply with the ban on pornographic websites would face sanctions.
