Sokoto, Nigeria – Sokoto State philanthropist and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Faruku Fada, has launched an annual mass circumcision initiative targeting 1,000 boys in Sokoto North and Sokoto South Local Government Areas.
The event, held on Saturday at the Alhuda College of Health Technology, aims to support less privileged families who cannot afford the procedure.
Circumcision, a culturally significant tradition among Hausa communities, is typically performed on boys under the age of 10 during the harmattan season. The practice is regarded as an important rite of passage, with circumcised men often accorded higher social status within the community.
Speaking at the event, PDP chairman in Sokoto State, Bello Goronyo, praised Fada’s efforts to uphold this cultural practice, describing the initiative as a demonstration of generosity and community service. He called on other philanthropists and wealthy individuals to emulate Fada’s example.
In his remarks, Fada emphasized the program’s inclusivity, noting that it serves all communities in the designated areas, regardless of tribal or political affiliations.
“The goal is to assist parents who are struggling financially and cannot afford to circumcise their children at the appropriate age,” Fada explained. “We will continue to contribute to society within the limits of our God-given resources, especially in these challenging economic times.”
Parents at the venue expressed gratitude for the gesture, highlighting the economic relief it provides.
“If I had to take my child to the hospital, it would cost N8,000. This program not only covers the cost but also provides medicine and financial support to manage the child’s recovery,” said one parent.
Another parent remarked on the timeliness of the initiative: “With the current economic struggles, this is a blessing. Many of us could not afford this on our own.”
