Benue, Nigeria – At least 11 people were killed on Christmas Day when suspected herdsmen attacked Ityuluv, Tse Azege, and Innyiev Ya communities in Mkomon district, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, December 25, disrupted Christmas celebrations in the affected communities. Witnesses reported that the invaders stormed the area, killing residents and setting houses ablaze.
A resident, who identified himself as Terlumun, recounted the incident: “The terrorist herders came this afternoon while people were celebrating Christmas. They attacked our communities, killing people and burning houses.”
The President-General of the Tiv socio-cultural group, Mdzough U Tiv Worldwide, Iorbee Ihagh, confirmed the attack during a telephone interview. Ihagh stated, “Eleven people were killed in the Christmas Day attack on Mkomon district of Turan in Kwande LG. Some are still missing as I speak to you now. Our people were celebrating Christmas when the Fulani herdsmen invaded the communities.”
Ihagh also highlighted that several areas in the local government, particularly Moon council ward, have been under siege for an extended period. He called on Governor Hyacinth Alia and President Bola Tinubu to strengthen security efforts in the state.
The Security Adviser to the Governor on Internal Affairs and Security, Joseph Har, also confirmed the attack. However, he referred journalists to the Director-General on Security, Gbamuam Jacob, for further details. Attempts to contact Jacob were unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable at the time of filing this report.
