Thailand’s New Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra Declares $400 Million in Assets
Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has publicly disclosed assets exceeding $400 million. Among her impressive portfolio are more than 200 high-end designer handbags valued at over $2 million and approximately 75 luxury watches with a total worth nearing $5 million.
Taking office in September, Paetongtarn is notable for being the youngest daughter of telecom magnate and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. This makes her the fourth member of the Shinawatra family to lead the Thai government over the past two decades. As a requirement for her position, she submitted a comprehensive report of her assets and liabilities to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), which has been made available through local media channels.
The declaration indicates that Paetongtarn holds assets totaling 13.8 billion baht (approximately $400 million). Additionally, the NACC document reveals she has liabilities amounting to nearly five billion baht, resulting in a net worth of 8.9 billion baht, roughly $258 million.
A spokesperson from the Pheu Thai Party confirmed to AFP that the figures reported by the media are accurate.
Paetongtarn’s father, Thaksin, who once owned the Manchester City Football Club, holds a net worth of $2.1 billion, according to Forbes, making him the 10th richest individual in Thailand. Thaksin’s wealth, amassed from his telecommunications enterprise Shin Corp, was a pivotal factor in his political ascent. Despite being in exile since his removal from power in a military coup, the Shinawatra family continues to exert significant influence in Thai politics.
