The ministry announced plans to appoint an Acting Vice-Chancellor in line with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s legal framework.
Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Anambra State, and removed the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Odoh, and Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Nwokike.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the statement, the decision followed allegations of irregularities in the appointment process of the Vice-Chancellor by the council.
“The sacking of the governing council and officials followed reports that the council illegally appointed an unqualified vice-chancellor without following due process,” the statement read.
The Governing Council, led by Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included members Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Amioleran Osahon, and retired General Funsho Oyeneyin.
The Federal Government intervened after concerns were raised over the council’s apparent violation of university governance laws, leading to a breakdown of harmony between the institution’s Senate and the council.
In a related move, President Tinubu also approved the removal of Ohieku Salami as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.
The Federal Ministry of Education confirmed the actions in a separate statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folashade Boriowo.
The ministry attributed the dismissal to “grave breaches” of university laws and disregard for directives from the government.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had earlier accused the council of bypassing due process in appointing Prof. Odoh as Vice-Chancellor and called for the council’s dissolution.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, emphasized the need for immediate action to stabilize the institution. “The illegal decisions taken by the Governing Council posed a significant risk of further destabilizing the university,” he said.
The ministry announced plans to appoint an Acting Vice-Chancellor in line with the institution’s legal framework. A new Governing Council will also be constituted to restore proper governance and ensure compliance with the law.
