The UK government has suspended plans to raise the family visa income threshold from £29,000 to £38,700 (approximately N80 million) in 2025.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the decision, citing the need for a comprehensive review of the policy by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
Key Points:
- Current threshold of £29,000 remains in place until review is completed
- No further adjustments to policy until review is finished
- MAC to evaluate impact of restricting migrant workers from bringing family members to UK
- Government seeks to enhance local workforce skills before considering foreign recruitment
Home Secretary Speaks Out On The Family Visa
Cooper criticized the recent surge in legal migration levels, saying it highlights failures in addressing labor market shortages. Non-EU long-term migration rose from 277,000 in 2022 to 423,000 in 2023.
“We’re setting out a different approach, linking migration policy and visa controls to skills and labor market policies, so immigration isn’t used as an alternative to training or tackling workforce problems here at home.” – Home Secretary Yvette Cooper
