Serbian Train Station Collapse Claims 14 Lives, Sparks National Mourning and Investigation
BELGRADE, SERBIA- At least 14 people lost their lives on Friday after the roof of a railway station collapsed in Novi Sad, northern Serbia. The tragic incident, reported by CNN affiliate N1, has left the country in mourning as rescue efforts continue.
Grim Toll as Rescue Operations Persist
Serbia’s Interior Minister, Ivica Dačić, updated the death toll, adding that the collapse also left more than 30 people injured. Two survivors have been rescued from the rubble and are currently hospitalized, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry. Rescuers remain in contact with two other individuals still trapped, as they continue their efforts to extract them safely.
Swift Response, but Many Lives Shattered
Within minutes of the emergency call, nearly 80 rescuers were deployed to the scene. The rescue operation, expected to continue for hours, has brought grief-stricken locals to the station, where they have placed candles in honor of the victims.
In response, the Serbian government declared Saturday a day of mourning. Prime Minister Miloš Vučević extended his condolences to the affected families and expressed gratitude for the efforts of first responders. He also promised accountability, emphasizing that those responsible would face consequences.
Local authorities reported that the railway station had undergone significant renovation, completed only in July of this year. The station’s roof, in particular, was updated in 2021, and additional renovation efforts followed in the months leading up to its recent reopening.
