Ethel Caterham Becomes World’s Oldest Person at 115 Following the Death of Brazilian Nun

Ethel Caterham, a British woman from Hampshire, has officially become the world’s oldest living person at the age of 115, following the passing of 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas. This milestone was confirmed by reputable research organizations, including the US-based Gerontological Research Group (GRG) and the LongeviQuest database.

Born on August 21, 1909, in a small village in Hampshire, Caterham was the second youngest of eight siblings. Currently residing in a care home in Surrey, she has outlived her husband, Norman Caterham, and both her daughters.

Caterham is now recognized as the oldest individual alive globally, according to the GRG and LongeviQuest, and is notable as the last surviving person born during the reign of King Edward VII. She also holds the record as the oldest person ever in Britain, according to the “Oldest in Britain” database.

Her 115th birthday was celebrated with special recognition, including a congratulatory letter from King Charles III, who described her milestone as truly remarkable. When asked about her longevity, Caterham attributed her long life to a simple philosophy: “Never arguing with anyone! I listen and I do what I like,” she shared on her last birthday.

Caterham’s family includes three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her adventurous spirit was evident early on; at 18, she traveled alone by ship to India to work as an au pair for a military family. Upon her return to the UK, she met her future husband at a dinner party, and they married in 1933. Their life together took them to Hong Kong and Gibraltar while Norman served abroad, before settling back in southern England. Norman Caterham passed away in 1976 in his sixties.

In her interviews, Ethel has emphasized the importance of embracing opportunities, maintaining a positive mental attitude, and practicing moderation. Her outlook on life reflects her longevity: “Say yes to every opportunity,” she advises.

In recent years, the title of the world’s oldest man was held by Briton John Tinniswood, who was recognized for eight months in 2024 until his death at age 112 in November.
