Nairobi, Kenya – Kenyan police fired tear gas on Thursday to disperse protesters and injured journalists in Nairobi demanding President William Ruto’s resignation, coinciding with the swearing-in of a newly reshuffled cabinet.
The protests, which began in mid-June, have claimed at least 60 lives, with accusations of excessive force by the police mounting.Amid heightened tensions, several journalists were injured after being targeted by tear gas canisters.
The International Press Association of East Africa condemned the attacks on media personnel, calling them “unacceptable and contrary to fundamental principles of democracy.”Despite a heavy police presence and roadblocks in Nairobi’s central business district, only a few dozen demonstrators gathered, chanting “we are peaceful.”
The protests, initially sparked by opposition to proposed tax hikes, have evolved into broader discontent with Ruto’s administration. In response to the unrest, Ruto has scrapped the tax hikes, reshuffled his cabinet, and implemented budget cuts.
The president described the changes as marking a “new chapter” for Kenya, but tensions remain high as the nation grapples with a severe cost-of-living crisis.Kenya’s police chief warned of potential violence during the demonstrations, which have often turned chaotic. Rights groups have reported the disappearance of dozens of protesters, with accusations of police brutality growing louder.
As the country’s economic growth continues, many Kenyans, particularly the youth, demand accountability and an end to corruption. Despite the turmoil, some, like 24-year-old Edwin Kagia, believe Ruto deserves more time to deliver on his promises.
