FA Cup Makes History Using Semi-Automated Offside Technology to Debut in Fifth Round for Faster and More Accurate Decisions

For the first time in English domestic football, semi-automated offside technology will be used during the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The Football Association (FA) announced on Thursday that the technology will be implemented in seven matches held at Premier League stadiums. The move marks a significant step toward modernizing officiating in English football.

FA Cup Leads the Way for Premier League Adoption

Following successful live trials in the FA Cup, the Premier League is expected to introduce the system later this season. Clubs had unanimously approved its use for the 2024-25 season in April, with an initial launch set for October 2024. However, delays were necessary for further testing.

UEFA first introduced the technology in the Champions League at the start of the 2022-23 season, with the system designed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of offside decisions.

How the Technology Works

The Semi-Automated Offside Technology provides precise optical player tracking and virtual offside lines.

The FA explained that the Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) enhances the speed of decision-making by providing precise optical player tracking and virtual offside lines. It also generates virtual graphics to improve the viewing experience for fans in stadiums and on broadcasts.

“The operation of Semi-Automated Offside Technology does not change the accuracy of decision-making but enhances the speed and efficiency of the process,”

the Football Association stated.

VAR to Be Used in All Fifth-Round Matches

Video Assistant Referees will also be active in all eight Football Association Cup fifth-round matches, including the game at Championship side Preston. In addition, referees will make in-stadium VAR announcements to ensure better communication with fans.

The FA Cup fifth round is scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, March 1.
