India Suspends Visas for Pakistani Nationals Amid Rising Tensions Following Pahalgam Terror Attack
New Delhi – In a significant escalation of diplomatic tensions, the Indian government announced on Thursday the immediate suspension of all types of visas issued to Pakistani nationals. The directive requires all Pakistani nationals currently in India to depart by April 27. The exception is for medical visa holders, whose visas will remain valid for an additional two days, expiring on April 29.
This move follows the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the death of 28 individuals, predominantly tourists. The Ministry of External Affairs stated: “In light of the decisions made by the CCS following the Pahalgam incident, the Government of India has enacted the suspension of visa services for Pakistani nationals, effective immediately.”
Additionally, the ministry recommended that Indian citizens residing in Pakistan return to India promptly. “It is imperative that all Pakistani nationals in India vacate the country before their visas expire under the revised order. Indian nationals are strongly discouraged from traveling to Pakistan, and those already there should consider repatriating as soon as possible,” the statement emphasized.
Following the CCS meeting on Wednesday, the Indian government also revoked SAARC visas for Pakistani citizens. Vikram Misri, the foreign secretary, confirmed during a press briefing that “Pakistani nationals will not be allowed entry into India under the SAARC visa Exemption scheme. Any Special Permissions for Entry Scheme (SPES) visas previously granted to Pakistani nationals are now cancelled, and those currently in India under this scheme have a 48-hour window to leave the country.”
Prime Minister Modi addressed the public in his first appearance since the Pahalgam attack, expressing deep sorrow for the lives lost and vowing to take strong retaliatory measures against those responsible. “We will track down and punish those behind this cowardly act,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to justice.
“The repercussions for these terrorists shall be severe and far beyond what they could have ever anticipated,” Modi added, reinforcing the sentiment that India’s resolve against terrorism remains unshaken. He stated, “Let this be known across the globe: we will identify and pursue every terrorist and their sponsors, no matter where they hide. The spirit of India will not falter in the face of terrorism.”
This announcement has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, further complicating an already strained bilateral relationship. The government’s tough stance following the attack signals a renewed commitment to national security in the face of ongoing threats.
