Belgian Man’s 19-Year Marriage Crumbles After Shocking Revelation That His Wife Was Born Male and Hid Her Past
A Belgian man, identified only as Jan, has been left in shock after discovering that his wife of nearly two decades, Monica, was born male. The shocking revelation has prompted him to seek an annulment and the court’s permission to evict Monica from their home in Antwerp, Belgium.
Jan, 64, reportedly learned the truth about his 48-year-old wife when a relative from Monica’s native Indonesia disclosed her past. The revelation has led to significant emotional turmoil, with Jan now undergoing psychiatric treatment.
A Love Story Turned Nightmare
The couple first met when Monica came to Belgium to work as an au pair for Jan’s sister. At the time, Jan’s second marriage was failing, and he quickly fell in love with Monica, describing her as a caring partner and a supportive figure to his two children from his previous marriage.
“I thought she was an attractive woman—completely a woman. She had no male traits,”
Jan told the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper. He recounted how the Belgian courts initially doubted Monica’s identity documents when she moved to Belgium, but they eventually accepted them.
The Moment of Truth
According to Jan, Monica went to great lengths to conceal her past, even pretending to menstruate by using sanitary products. It wasn’t until a family member exposed Monica’s secret that Jan confronted her.
“I pushed her against the wall and said: ‘Now I know the truth. Are you a man?’ She finally confessed she was born male and had undergone gender reassignment surgery,”
he revealed.
The confession shattered Jan’s world. “That evening came to blows,” he admitted, describing the intensity of the confrontation.
Living in Limbo
While awaiting a court decision on the annulment, Jan’s request to have Monica forcibly removed from their shared home has been denied. The estranged couple now lives in separate rooms, barely interacting.
Jan described the situation as a nightmare, stating, “My world has collapsed.”
The case has sparked conversations about identity, deception, and the complexities of marriage, drawing widespread attention in Belgium and beyond.
