Meta has announced that it is lifting restrictions on former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, effective immediately.
This decision comes after Trump’s accounts were suspended indefinitely in 2021 following the violent storming of the US Capitol by his supporters.
Accounts Reinstated
Trump’s accounts were reinstated in February 2023, but with the threat of penalties for future breaches. However, Meta has now lifted these additional restrictions, allowing Trump to use the platforms without fear of suspension or penalty.
Political Expression
In a blog post, Meta stated that it believes the American people should be able to hear from presidential nominees on the same basis, and that Trump’s accounts will be subject to the same Community Standards as all Facebook and Instagram users.
Hate Speech And Incitement Policies
Meta emphasized that its policies designed to prevent hate speech and incitement to violence still apply to all users, including Trump.
Trump’s Social Media Presence
Trump, who was banned from Twitter and YouTube, now mainly communicates on his own social media platform, Truth Social. His Facebook profile, which has 34 million users, features messages originally published on Truth Social, as well as invitations to rallies and campaign videos.
This development marks a significant shift in Trump’s online presence, allowing him to reach a wider audience on two of the world’s largest social media platforms.
