The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has distanced itself from recent demonstrations in northern Nigeria where protesters were seen carrying Russian flags.
The embassy’s statement came in response to concerns about possible foreign interference in Nigerian politics.
Protesters across Nigeria’s northern regions have been spotted waving Russian flags and chanting slogans, with some holding placards featuring various messages. This development follows allegations of Russian meddling in the political crises of West African nations such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
In response, the Russian Embassy issued a statement clarifying that the Russian government has no role in these protests. The embassy emphasized that Russia does not engage in the internal affairs of other countries, including Nigeria, and that the actions of these protesters are not officially sanctioned by Moscow.
The embassy’s statement read, “We have observed reports and images online of protests in northern Nigeria featuring Russian flags and support for President Vladimir Putin. We wish to make it clear that the Russian government, including its officials, is not involved in or endorsing these activities.”
The statement further noted, “Russia respects Nigerian democracy and acknowledges the right to peaceful demonstrations under Nigerian law. However, we strongly condemn any actions that result in violence or disruptions.”
