In a devastating incident late Tuesday night, a historic hotel collapsed in Kröv, Germany partially collapsed, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving several others trapped under debris. The collapse occurred around 23:00 local time (21:00 GMT) at a hotel located near the scenic River Moselle.
According to local police, there were fourteen people inside the building at the time of the collapse. Emergency services have successfully rescued a two-year-old child, a man, and two women so far, as reported by German broadcaster SWR. Rescue operations are ongoing with over 200 emergency personnel, including firefighters, police, and rescue dog teams, working tirelessly at the scene.
The incident occurred when the hotel’s roof caved in, causing the top floor to fall onto the lower level and shattering windows. Five people managed to escape unharmed, but nine others remain trapped beneath the rubble.
In a Wednesday news conference, fire inspector Jörg Teusch confirmed that the two fatalities: a man and a woman died as a direct result of the collapse. The building, dating back to the 1600s, underwent significant renovations in the 1980s, including the addition of an extra floor.
The Moselle valley, renowned for its picturesque vineyards and charming towns, is currently in a state of emergency. Nearby residents have been instructed to evacuate due to fears of further structural collapse. One guest recounted a harrowing experience, stating they were in the toilet when the floor beneath them gave way.
As rescue efforts continue, the community remains hopeful for the safe recovery of those still trapped.
