The White House criticized the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday, labeling him as having “a lot of blood on his hands.” Despite extending condolences following his death in a helicopter crash, the U.S. maintained a critical stance on Raisi’s legacy.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby addressed reporters, emphasizing Raisi’s culpability in severe human rights abuses within Iran and his support for regional proxies, including Hamas. “This was a man who had a lot of blood on his hands,” Kirby stated.
Kirby acknowledged the gravity of the loss of life and noted that official condolences were extended appropriately. Iran has declared a five-day mourning period following the tragic crash, which occurred in a mountainous and forested region under poor weather conditions. Raisi, 63, who served as president for nearly three years, was a prominent figure in Iran’s conservative and hardline political factions and was anticipated to seek re-election next year.
