Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he is willing to step down if his resignation would secure peace for Ukraine and facilitate the country’s entry into NATO.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Zelensky responded to a question about his potential resignation, saying, “If [it guarantees] peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to resign, I am ready. I can exchange it for NATO.” His remarks come as Ukraine continues to face Russia’s full-scale invasion, which has been ongoing for nearly three years.
The Ukrainian President has previously warned that Ukraine’s army would need to double in size if the country were denied NATO membership, highlighting the importance of Western military alliances in Ukraine’s defense strategy. However, earlier this month, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that Kyiv’s accession to NATO remains unrealistic at this time.
Meanwhile, tensions between Zelensky and former U.S. President Donald Trump have escalated. Trump recently accused Ukraine of instigating the war and referred to Zelensky as a “dictator” for postponing elections due to the conflict. He also called on both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the war.
In response, the Ukrainian President underscored the need for clear security commitments from Trump, should he return to the White House, to ensure Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian aggression.
The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts and military developments continue to shape Ukraine’s future.
