As a result of the ban, Arne Slot will be in the stands for Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League fixtures against Newcastle on Wednesday and Southampton on March 8. However, the suspension applies only to domestic matches, meaning he will be on the touchline for Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain on March 5 and the League Cup final against Newcastle at Wembley on March 16.
Liverpool, UK – Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been handed a two-match touchline ban and a £70,000 ($89,000) fine following his actions after the controversial Merseyside derby against Everton on February 12.
The heated encounter at Goodison Park ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw after James Tarkowski’s stoppage-time equaliser, sparking chaotic scenes. Referee Michael Oliver sent off Slot, his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, and Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucouré after the final whistle.
On Wednesday, the Football Association (FA) confirmed that an independent regulatory commission had sanctioned both clubs and their staff. In a statement, the FA explained that Slot had acted in an “improper manner” and used “insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour” towards the match officials. The Dutchman admitted to the charge, leading to the suspension and fine.
Everton and Liverpool were also penalised, receiving fines of £65,000 and £50,000, respectively.
The altercation between Jones and Doucouré reportedly stemmed from the Everton midfielder celebrating in front of Liverpool fans, prompting a confrontation that led to further involvement from players and staff.
Reflecting on the incident, Slot acknowledged his mistake. “I should have acted differently after the game, but it’s an emotional sport, and sometimes individuals make the wrong decisions — and that’s definitely what I did,” he said.
