The official website of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) became inaccessible on Wednesday night, just a day after the domain name was renewed for an additional five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029. This sudden outage has left millions of customers unable to access the bank’s online services.
The incident, which began on August 14, has not yet been claimed by any known hacker group. However, there are growing concerns that cybercriminals may have created a fraudulent version of the website in an attempt to steal customers’ data through phishing schemes.
A cybersecurity expert with experience in Nigeria’s banking sector suggested that the bank’s login credentials might have been compromised rather than the domain itself being hijacked for resale.
GTBank customers have expressed their frustration on social media platform X, with many complaining about their inability to access the website to carry out transactions. In response, GTBank representatives on X urged customers to be patient and directed them to an alternative channel for support.
Despite the website outage, GTBank’s mobile banking apps on Android and iOS appear to be functioning normally, with no reported disruptions as of this report.
GTBank, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, serves millions of customers across Nigeria and other African countries. The bank has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
