WAEC Releases WASSCE 2023 Private Candidates' Results, Records 44.29% Pass Rate

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has unveiled the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates conducted between October 27 and December 20, 2023.

Out of the 85,600 candidates registered, 80,904 sat for the exams across 568 centers nationwide.

According to WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosore Adesina, 44.29% of candidates achieved credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Among the candidates, 49.18% were male, and 50.82% were female.

While 96.93% of results have been fully processed and released, 3.07% are pending due to errors. WAEC is working to resolve these issues promptly.

Admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria hinges on performance in exams such as the WASSCE, where candidates are expected to obtain credits in five relevant subjects.

Of the successful candidates, 49.21% were male, and 50.79% were female. Additionally, 57.19% secured credits in five subjects with or without English Language and Mathematics.

WAEC clarified that this pass rate analysis differs from that of WASSCE for school candidates, emphasizing that private candidates have the freedom to choose the number of subjects they wish to write. This flexibility allows them to address specific deficiencies.

However, 7,192 candidates (8.89%) are under scrutiny for alleged infractions, with their results withheld pending investigation. Candidates are urged to check their results on the WAEC website and confirm their status before accessing digital certificates.

Out of the candidates who sat the exams, 211 had special needs, with WAEC ensuring adequate provisions for their accommodation during the examination.
