The inauguration event, held on Tuesday, witnessed the presence of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the WTO, who emphasized Nigeria’s immense potential in the production and export of agricultural commodities such as cowpea and sesame. However, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala highlighted a significant hurdle facing the country—the persistent rejection of its agricultural products due to challenges in transportation and storage, both domestically and for export purposes.

Nigeria, acclaimed as the third-largest producer of sesame in Africa, reported an output of approximately 500 metric tonnes in 2022. Additionally, the country boasts an annual production of over 5.2 million metric tonnes of dried cowpea, underscoring its significance in the global agricultural landscape.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the pivotal role of the newly established facility in addressing these challenges. By providing capacity-building opportunities for Nigerian farmers, the facility aims to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to cultivate agricultural products that adhere to international export standards. Through training programs and technical assistance, farmers will be empowered to implement best practices in production, storage, and transportation, thereby enhancing the quality and safety of their products.

The initiative is poised to not only enhance food safety measures but also to bolster Nigeria’s position in the global agricultural market. By ensuring compliance with international standards, Nigerian agricultural products are expected to gain greater acceptance in international markets, leading to increased export opportunities and economic growth. Furthermore, the implementation of improved food safety practices will contribute to the overall health and well-being of consumers, both domestically and abroad.

The launch of the standards trade development facility signifies a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest for agricultural development and trade expansion. It reflects the commitment of the WTO and other stakeholders to support developing countries in overcoming trade barriers and harnessing the full potential of their agricultural sectors. Through collaborative efforts and targeted interventions, Nigeria is poised to emerge as a leading exporter of high-quality agricultural products, contributing to the country’s economic growth and sustainability.

As the facility begins its operations, stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on Nigeria’s agricultural sector. With enhanced food safety standards and increased trade capacities, Nigerian farmers and exporters are well-positioned to seize new opportunities in the global market, driving economic development and prosperity for the nation as a whole.
