Maritime Insecurity: Amaechi to Speak at Chatham House, London Today | Verified Wire

Nigeria’s minister of transportation, Rt Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi will be speaking today at the Chatham House in London.

The minister who is speaking on the topic, “Nigeria’s Role in Responding to Maritime Insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea” is set to deliver his speech by 10 am London time.

His speech will address issues stemming from reports from commercial operators of ambiguities surrounding the region’s prevailing security model of embarked coastal state personnel on commercial vessels, which is formally prohibited in Nigeria’s territorial waters. It will further highlight the need for greater transparency and a standardization of policies across the region, together with further domestic capacity-building, required to foster maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, as the government aims to strengthen the country’s blue economy and develop Nigeria as a maritime hub for West and Central Africa. Emphasis will be made on the need for collaboration between the government and the private sector as a crucial process in unlocking the country’s maritime potential.
Participants for the event include Dr Dakuku Peterside, Director General and CEO, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and others. The event will be Chaired by Dr Alex Vines OBE, Research Director, Area Studies and International Law; Head, Africa Programme, Chatham House.Participation is strictly by invitation.
