Sofia Nkwor, a 24-year-old mother from Ushie in Ndokwa East of Delta State, has confessed to abandoning her 13-month-old baby in a well in Araya community, Isoko South council area, on April 26, 2024. She expressed remorse for her actions during a parade by the Nigeria Police, Delta State Command, where she was showcased alongside 14 other criminals by the State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda.
Nkwor, a former bar attendant, disclosed that she felt overwhelmed and lacked support after her boyfriend, who impregnated her, denied paternity of the child. “The father rejected his child, I stay with my grandma. She rejected me and the baby. I regret my actions, I feel bad. I was in a bad mood at the time I did it. I have no helper. It is only me who takes care of the baby and does everything. I am tired,” she explained.
The discovery of the abandoned child floating in the well was made by children playing in the area, who promptly alerted the local vigilante, leading to police intervention, as narrated by the Police Commissioner.
