President Bola Tinubu has mandated a thorough reassessment of the recently announced governing boards of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
This directive comes ahead of the planned inauguration and retreat for the nominees scheduled for May 31.
The Federal Ministry of Education had earlier released the list of nominees for chairmen, pro-chancellors, and members of the boards and councils of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. However, the announcement sparked public outcry over the perceived imbalance in the nominations, with some states receiving significantly more nominations than others.
In response to the feedback, President Tinubu has ordered a complete review of the governing councils’ membership. This decision underscores his commitment to ensuring adherence to the federal character principle enshrined in the Constitution.
The President’s directive aims to achieve a fair national representation, ensuring that all parts of the country are adequately represented on the boards of tertiary institutions.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the review in a statement released on May 23, 2024.
