The Rivers State House of Assembly, headed by Martin Amaewhule, has given Governor Siminalayi Fubara a 7-day deadline to re-submit the 2024 budget to the House.
This development comes after the Amaewhule-led Assembly held its first sitting on Monday, following a prolonged crisis that has divided the House into two factions.
Governor Fubara had earlier presented the budget to the Oko-Jumbo-led House, which was presided over by his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, as Speaker. The budget was passed, and Fubara signed it into law.
The crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly appears to be far from resolved, despite a recent Court of Appeal judgement nullifying the expulsion of Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers.
The Appeal Court ruled that the Rivers State High Court lacked jurisdiction to grant the exparte order.
However, the Oko-Jumbo-led faction has appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, citing errors in the Court of Appeal’s judgement.
Similarly, Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt division on Monday struck out the appeal on the tenure elongation of Local Government Chairmen for lack of merit.
The political stalemate continues, with the Amaewhule-led House demanding that Fubara re-present the budget within 7 days.
The Rivers crisis remains fluid, with no clear resolution in sight.
