Nigeria Imports $2.25bn Fuel From Malta In 9 Years

A recent report by Trade Map has revealed that Nigeria imported fuel worth $2.25 billion from Malta between 2013 and 2023.

The report shows that Nigeria’s fuel imports from Malta increased by 342% from $47.5 million in 2013 to $2.8 billion in 2023. The country imported fuel worth $59.98 million in 2014, $117.01 million in 2015, and $13.32 million in 2016.

However, there was no fuel importation from Malta between 2017 and 2022. But in 2023, Nigeria imported fuel worth $2.08 billion from Malta, a significant increase.

This revelation comes after Alhaji Aliko Dangote, founder of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, alleged that some Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) officials own blending plants in Malta.

Dangote had stated, “Some of the terminals, some of the NNPC people, and some traders have opened blending plants somewhere off Malta. We all know these areas. We know what they are doing.”

However, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPC, Mele Kyari, denied owning a blending plant outside Nigeria. Kyari stated that he is not aware of any employee of the NNPC that owns or operates a blending plant in Malta or anywhere else in the world.
