Abuja, Nigeria – Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has highlighted the refusal of electricity consumers to pay their bills and energy theft as major factors hindering the growth of the power sector in Nigeria.
Speaking to members of the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMICO) Civil Committee on Energy in Abuja, Adelabu attributed the current challenges facing the sector to “past actions or inactions of past administrations.”
However, he noted that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has taken steps to address these issues, including transitioning to a cost-reflective tariff, which will lead to stable power supply.
Adelabu emphasized that the sector’s growth is frustrated by three key factors:
- Refusal of electricity consumers to pay their bills
- Energy theft
- Vandalization of power infrastructure
He urged consumers to pay their bills, civil societies to report power theft, and individuals to protect power infrastructure from vandalism.
