Kamala Harris Arrives in Chicago for Democratic National Convention Amid Tight Race with Trump
Kamala Harris has touched down in Chicago ahead of the Democratic National Convention, where she is set to be formally confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate. Harris flew into O’Hare Airport on Air Force Two after a day of campaigning in Pennsylvania alongside her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Pennsylvania, a pivotal battleground state, was also the site of a recent rally by her Republican rival, Donald Trump, who took to the stage on Saturday. The state, which played a decisive role in the last two presidential elections, is once again in the spotlight, with a new CBS News poll showing Harris and Trump in a dead heat in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
On Sunday, Harris took aim at Trump in a speech, indirectly calling him a “coward” and emphasizing the importance of leadership that uplifts rather than tears down. “Anybody who’s about beating down other people is a coward,” she told supporters.
Trump, speaking a day earlier in Pennsylvania, dismissed his opponent as a “lunatic” and boasted that he was “much better looking” than her.
Harris’s arrival in Chicago marks the beginning of a high-stakes week, as she is expected to join President Biden on stage when he addresses the convention on Monday. The event will culminate on Thursday with Harris’s primetime speech, where she will formally accept the party’s nomination for the November 5th election.
Security is tight around the convention venue, with tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters expected to rally in Chicago during the four-day event.
