Snipers End Russian Prison Siege, Hostages Freed After Knife-Wielding Inmates Strike
Inmates at the IK-19 penal colony in Russia’s Volgograd region briefly took several prison staff hostage on Friday before being “neutralized” by police snipers, authorities confirmed. The tense standoff was swiftly resolved when special forces from the Russian National Guard eliminated four inmates with precise shots, ensuring the safe release of all hostages, according to a TASS news agency report.
The incident occurred at the Surovikino penal colony, located 120 kilometers west of Volgograd, where inmates reportedly seized staff during a disciplinary committee meeting. The uprising resulted in the death of at least one prison employee, according to early reports from emergency responders.
Photos shared by the pro-Kremlin Telegram channel Mash depicted bloodied guards and inmates brandishing knives. Unverified videos on Telegram purportedly show the attackers claiming affiliation with the Islamic State and stating that the hostage-taking was in retaliation for the Crocus City Hall terror attack in March.
