Canada Ends Policy Aimed at Easing COVID-19 Hardships
Ottawa,— Canada has officially ended the temporary policy that allowed visitors to apply for work permits without leaving the country. The policy, introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in August 2020 in response to COVID-19 travel restrictions, is no longer in effect.
Initially set to expire in February 2025, the policy was terminated early as part of IRCC’s efforts to manage the number of temporary residents and maintain the integrity of the immigration system. Reports of misuse by bad actors exploiting the policy to facilitate unauthorized work played a role in the decision.
Visitors who applied before August 28, 2024, will still have their applications processed under the old rules.
