Nigerian Siblings Sentenced to 17 Years and Six Months in Prison for Sextortion
Two Nigerian brothers, Samuel Ogoshi, 24, and his brother, Samson Ogoshi, 21, have been sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison for their role in a Sextortion scheme that led to the tragic death of a 17-year-old high school student in Michigan.
The brothers, from Lagos, Nigeria, were extradited to the United States and charged in connection with the scheme, which involved the sexual exploitation of over 100 victims, including 11 minors. According to court documents, the Ogoshi brothers used hacked social media accounts to create fake profiles and conduct online research about their victims, learning their personal details and identities.
The brothers would then solicit their minor victims to produce sexually explicit images of themselves, threatening to disclose the images to their family, friends, and classmates unless they agreed to pay money using online cash applications. The scheme resulted in the death of Jordan DeMay, a male high school student from Michigan.
The Ogoshi brothers were found guilty of conspiring to sexually exploit multiple minors and were sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison. They will also undergo five years of supervised release following their imprisonment. The sentencing was met with condemnation from Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, who stated that the defendants’ actions were “a serious violation of the trust of children and young people.”
US Attorney Mark Totten for the Western District of Michigan added that the case serves as a warning to criminals who engage in similar schemes: “You are not immune from justice. We will track you down and hold you accountable, even if we have to go halfway around the world to do so.”
The third defendant in the case, Ezekiel Robert, a Nigerian national, is still awaiting extradition following an appeal in his home country. The case highlights the global nature of online exploitation and the importance of international cooperation in bringing perpetrators to justice.
