Egor LGA, Nigeria – As the Edo governorship election progresses, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested individuals suspected of engaging in vote buying in Egor Local Government Area.

The arrests were made around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.

However, local residents have countered the EFCC’s claims, insisting that those arrested were not involved in vote buying. They alleged that the individuals were being unfairly targeted and victimized.

In a related development, the Nigerian Police arrested suspected political thugs believed to be affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The arrests were part of an overnight raid aimed at preventing election-related violence.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Saturday. According to Adejobi, police operatives recovered weapons from the suspects, including three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols and one locally made gun.

“The Nigeria Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb electoral violence in Edo State with the arrest of two political thugs,” Adejobi stated.

The arrested suspects were identified as 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen, both alleged members of the PDP. Obanor, said to be a leader of an armed group, was arrested at Oredo Ward 4 around 9:00 p.m., while Tajudeen was apprehended in Igara Akoko, Edo. Upon searching their bags, police recovered the firearms in their possession.

The arrests are part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to ensure a peaceful and fair governorship election in Edo State.
