Lagos, Nigeria – Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has publicly criticized Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for purchasing a new presidential jet and traveling to China to request loans.

Adeyanju made these remarks during his appearance on New Central’s weekly program, A Place at the Table, where pressing national issues are discussed.

“The President buys a brand-new jet, takes it to China to go and borrow money. Who does that?” Adeyanju questioned, expressing his dismay at the decision.

The newly acquired aircraft, an Airbus A330-200 (ACJ330-200) with the registration VP-CAC (msn 1053) and marked 5N-FGA, features high-end amenities. It includes a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, an office, a conference and dining room, and first-class and economy seating arrangements at the rear.

The acquisition of the luxury jet has drawn criticism due to Nigeria’s ongoing economic difficulties, including rising inflation and financial constraints. Earlier in June, reports surfaced that the Nigerian government planned to spend over N150 billion on the new presidential jet, raising concerns amid the country’s economic challenges.

The Airbus A330, which was previously held by a German bank, was reportedly acquired after an Arab prince and businessman defaulted on a multi-million-dollar loan. The aircraft is designed to provide top-tier luxury and comfort, catering to VIP and private markets.
