Umuahia, Nigeria – The Abia State Government has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for its workers, set to take effect this October.

The announcement was made by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, following a State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu highlighted that the decision demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants in the state. He noted that the move aligns with the Federal Government’s recent approval of the new minimum wage.

“The state government is fully dedicated to implementing the minimum wage, and payment will commence shortly,” Kanu said.

He also indicated that while the N70,000 figure serves as the national benchmark, the state government remains open to potential adjustments.

“If the Governor decides to exceed the national standard and provide even higher pay, we will fully support that,” Kanu added.
