France coach Didier Deschamps excludes Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé for crucial Nations League fixtures amid recent controversies and injury recovery
In a surprising decision, France coach Didier Deschamps has left star striker Kylian Mbappé out of the squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League clashes against Israel and Italy. Deschamps explained that omitting the Real Madrid forward was “for the best,” though the move has stirred discussion given Mbappé’s ongoing challenges both on and off the field.
A Second Omission for France’s Captain
This is the second consecutive France squad the 25-year-old captain has missed after also being sidelined in October’s matches against Israel and Belgium. Although rested then to recover from a minor thigh injury, Mbappé returned to Real Madrid games days later, creating controversy as France faced Israel and Belgium without him. During this period, Mbappé was reported to be in Stockholm with friends, where Swedish media alleged he was under investigation for rape. He has firmly denied these allegations as “fake news,” while his lawyer has indicated potential libel action. A Swedish prosecutor confirmed an investigation is underway but did not name Mbappé.
“I have spoken with him and I made this decision because I believe it is for the best,”
Deschamps told the press in Paris, emphasizing that off-field issues did not factor into his choice.
“Kylian wanted to join the team, but I stand by my decision.”
France’s Upcoming Challenges Without Mbappé
France currently sits second in Group A2, one point behind Italy. The team will face Israel on November 14 at Stade de France before traveling to Milan for a crucial clash with Italy three days later. The top two teams in the group will qualify for the quarter-finals in March, with the semi-finals and final scheduled for next June.
Veteran midfielder N’Golo Kante, now with Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, has been recalled to the squad, joined by Adrien Rabiot from Marseille. Additionally, Lille’s promising goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier earns his first call-up, replacing West Ham United’s Alphonse Areola.
Uncertain Path Ahead for Mbappé
Despite recent struggles, Mbappé has managed to make four appearances for Real Madrid since October, netting one goal. However, he has yet to reach his usual electrifying form. Deschamps has expressed confidence in the decision to omit him from the roster, aiming to protect the team’s dynamics as France looks to advance in the Nations League.
