Delta State High Court Begins Hearings in Child Trafficking Case Involving 15-Year-Old Victim

The Family Court division of the Delta State High Court, located in Ughelli, has begun proceedings in a case aimed at ensuring justice and protection for a 15-year-old girl (name and identity withheld) who is reportedly a victim of trafficking for sexual exploitation by her mother. This legal action was initiated by Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, a child rights advocate based in Delta State.

During a court session held on Friday, Justice Mary Gesikeme-Akebotah assigned Mrs. Magareth Oghuvwu, the proprietress of Triumphal Model School in Effurun, as the temporary guardian for the girl while the case is being heard and resolved.

The judge instructed the court bailiff to serve the necessary legal documents and notices through registered courier to the Delta State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, located at No. 19 Maryam Babangida Way, opposite SUBEB, Asaba, in advance of the next scheduled hearing. She also mandated that similar documents be delivered to the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police.

In addition, an interim order was issued to prohibit all involved parties from taking any further actions in this matter until the case is fully adjudicated. The proceedings have been adjourned until Friday, December 13, 2024.

It has been reported that the victim’s mother allegedly facilitated her daughter’s trafficking to a sex trafficker at Beeland Hotel. Fortunately, the girl managed to escape and sought refuge in the home of her school proprietress.
