Rivers State Governor Fubara Reaffirms Commitment to Elevating Rivers State University at 36th Convocation Ceremony
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to meeting its financial commitments to Rivers State University and its goal of becoming one of the country’s premier institutions. The governor made this declaration during the university’s 36th Convocation, held on Saturday in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Represented by Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, Fubara expressed pride in the university’s achievements and its significant role in developing skilled personnel. He emphasized that the true measure of a university lies in its capacity to advance human knowledge and foster societal development through innovative research and initiatives.
The Governor urged the university’s management to focus on enhancing research and forging partnerships with the private sector to promote internships, create jobs, and secure a prosperous future for its students and graduates. He also extended his gratitude to the Governing Council, chaired by Justice Mary Peter-Odili, for its effective leadership and the positive trajectory the university has taken in a short timeframe.
“We commend your success in creating a supportive learning environment and maintaining industrial peace, which has greatly contributed to the university’s transformation, thanks to devoted educators and efficient administration,” Fubara added.
In his address, the Chancellor of the university, Justice Sidi Muhammad, acknowledged the Fubara administration’s ongoing support for the university’s founding vision by providing consistent funding despite prevailing economic difficulties. He called for collaboration among stakeholders to help train and guide young people to become future leaders of the nation.
The Chairman of the university’s Governing Council expressed gratitude for the state government’s support while encouraging graduates to serve as exemplary representatives of the university.
In his remarks, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule, the Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University, noted that this convocation marked his final one before his term concludes. He announced that the university is graduating a total of 8,920 students, with 120 of them achieving First-Class honours.
