Tragic Attack Claims Lives in Gidan Ado Community of Plateau State

In a heartbreaking incident in the Gidan Ado community of Ganawuri, located within the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, no fewer than 15 individuals lost their lives in a violent attack carried out by armed assailants. In addition to the fatalities, several others were injured and are currently receiving medical attention in a nearby hospital.

This attack comes on the heels of a horrific event a year ago when armed groups disrupted festivities during the Christmas season in various communities, including those in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, and Bokkos Local Government Areas. In response to these past incidents, local security agencies have been engaged in extensive discussions with community leaders and stakeholders to prevent a repeat occurrence this year. Nonetheless, the recent violence highlights the ongoing challenges that these efforts face.

While the security forces, including the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OpSH), have yet to provide specific details about the latest incident, Riyom’s local government chairman, Sati Shuwa, has confirmed the loss of life. He stated that the attack occurred on Sunday night, leading to a mass burial for the victims, with two survivors reportedly receiving treatment in a hospital for their injuries.

Additionally, Sam Jugo, the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Describing the attack’s location as Ri Do, a hamlet in Riyom populated mainly by members of the Irigwe ethnic group of Bassa LGA, Jugo lamented the loss of lives that had been expected to celebrate the festive season with their families. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and the broader Irigwe community.

As investigations are underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding this devastating event, the community grapples with the aftermath of the violence, calling into question the effectiveness of security measures in the region.
