Human Rights Advocate Dele Farotimi Freed After Meeting Tough Bail Conditions Following Defamation Allegations Linked to His Book on Nigeria’s Justice System

Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights activist and author, has been released from the Ekiti State Correctional Centre after fulfilling stringent bail conditions imposed by the court.

Farotimi’s arrest stemmed from a defamation petition filed by Babalola, who alleged that Farotimi made damaging claims in his book, Nigeria And Its Criminal Justice System.

Last Friday, the Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court granted Farotimi bail with the following conditions: a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own property), the submission of his passport, and a restriction on granting media interviews after his release.

Farotimi was freed on Tuesday morning after complying with these terms.

Despite the restrictions, Farotimi addressed the media briefly, asserting his integrity.

“I have never lied against anyone in my life. Whatever I have said about an individual or an institution is the truth,” he declared.

Omoyele Sowore, a prominent social activist, confirmed Farotimi’s release in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti State and is now returning home to Lagos. The struggle continues! Happy holidays to you all!”

Farotimi’s release marks a significant moment in his ongoing battle for justice and human rights advocacy.
