American Airlines Grounds Flights for an Hour Due to Technical Issue on Busy Christmas Eve
American Airlines resumed operations on Tuesday after a technical malfunction prompted the airline to ground all domestic flights for one hour during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. According to Bridgett Frey, assistant administrator for communications at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the airline identified the issue and subsequently requested a nationwide ground stop, which was lifted shortly thereafter.
The ground halt occurred between 1150 GMT and 1250 GMT on Christmas Eve, a peak travel day in the United States and around the world. As details surrounding the specific nature of the technical issue remained unclear, travelers took to social media to express their frustrations about how the delays could affect their holiday plans and family reunions. One traveler, who experienced a return to the gate before deplaning, tweeted, “Heck of a way to start Christmas.”
American Airlines responded to numerous inquiries on social media, asking for patience from passengers and assuring them that “Our team is working to get everyone safely in the air soon.”
